FALL SEMESTER:

AUGUST  Student Essentials Ms.Camacho will be providing students with an essential beginning-of-year presentation introducing herself to everyone and explaining how she can support our buffs through middle school both academically and socially/emotionally. Students will learn how to seek help through self-referrals as well as get a refresher on our stop it app basic safety protocol reporting procedures. 

SEPTEMBER  is National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month! It is one of the leading causes of death amongst middle school children. i will use this time to discuss the risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors, and provide students with helpful resources to make sure do this mandated lesson in a timely manner & where it makes sense. 

OCTOBER is when we typically celebrate National Red Ribbon Week for Drug Awareness, but due to the new legislative requirements below, we have made the focus of this week on opioids and fentanyl poisoning. 

Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week  AKA RED RIBBON WEEK 

TEC §29.9074 requires the governor to designate a week to be known as Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week in public schools to educate students about the dangers posed by the drug fentanyl and the risks of fentanyl poisoning, including overdose. The week may include age-appropriate instruction, including instruction on the prevention of the abuse of and addiction to fentanyl, as determined by each school district.

Annual instruction for students in grades 6-12

Each school district and open-enrollment charter school is required to annually provide to students in grades 6–12 research-based instruction on fentanyl abuse prevention and drug poisoning awareness (TEC, §38.040). The required instruction in fentanyl prevention and drug poisoning awareness must include the following:

  • Suicide prevention 
  • Prevention of the abuse of and addiction to fentanyl 
  • Awareness of local school and community resources and any processes involved in accessing those resources 
  • Health education that includes information about substance use and abuse, including youth substance use and abuse 

 

SPRING SEMESTER:

JANUARY/FEBRUARY: Ms. Camacho will begin going into classrooms to start transitions for next year's course selection processes and explaining choices. Students will be able to make selections and will enter them into their Skyward accounts. This will include visits to the elementary campus and planning for our students to go to the high school campus. The high school counselor will visit our 8th graders here at FMS.

APRIL: TEST TAKING STRATEGIES, STRESS, COPING SKILLS, SELF-REGULATION

MAY: MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH (CHILDREN’S MH AWARENESS WEEK; BE SEEN IN GREEN DAY)
