Welcome to the Algebra and the 2020-2021 School Year!

Course Information & Objectives: The Algebra 1 curriculum builds on math concepts from grades 6th  through 8th. Algebra 1 is an advanced course when taken in Middle School. Upon successful completion of the course and the End-of-Course assessment (EOC), a student achieves the requirements for high school credit. Students who successfully complete this course will earn credit toward high school graduation and should enroll in Pre-AP geometry as a high school freshman.

Topics Studied

Expressions, Equations & Inequalities

Linear Equations and Inequalities

Linear Functions

Applications of Linear Functions

Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

Laws of Exponents and Expressions

Polynomial Operations

Factoring Polynomials

Quadratic Equations

Simplifying Radical Expressions

Quadratic Functions

Assessments:

  • Assignments will be given most days and will be graded. Students may be provided time to begin work on assignments in class. I highly encourage students to effectively use time provided during class to complete assignments.
  • There will be an exam after every unit of instruction. Some units will have a mid-unit test in addition to the unit exam.
  • Completing and turning in assignments on time is very important. In learning Algebra 1, we are building on the knowledge gained in each class meeting and assignment in order to be successful with the concepts that follow. Not mastering a concept before proceeding to the next will result in much more difficulty with learning the new material.
  • If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain make-up assignments and notes. You have the number of days that you were absent plus one to complete the work. If you are absent when a test is given, you should be prepared to take the test when you return to school.
  • Students are highly encouraged to contact me as soon as they realize they are having difficulty with the material. This will greatly reduce the possibility of falling behind.
  • Algebra I students will take their state assessment (Algebra 1 EOC) between May 4th and May 7th 2021.

Note to 8th Grade Algebra 1 Parents:

Please feel free to contact me at any time about your student. You may either call me through the school’s phone system at 254-793-2504 and ask for Mr. Beliveau, or via email at cbeliveau@florenceisd.net. I prefer to use email when possible, as I can only receive phone calls during my conference period. My scheduled conference time is 8th Period (2:48 - 3:40). I read and respond to emails as often as possible throughout the day. I will want to share positive things about your student as well as any concerns.

Please ensure your phone number and email address are current in our system.

Algebra 1 is a high school level class. Your student will receive high school credit for this class upon successful completion of Algebra 1. I expect 8th grade Algebra 1 students to possess habits and skills in line with what would be expected of them in a high school Algebra 1 class. I do not expect to have to deal with any disruptions to the learning environment due to behavior issues. Please speak to your student about habits and skills that should be found in a positive and safe learning environment. (bringing supplies and work each day, taking notes, paying attention, keeping their area clean. not disrupting the classroom, etc.).

Remote Learners and Parents:

I am provided one class period daily to teach, plan, manage and support all aspects of remote learning for all students not attending class in-person for both Algebra 1 and 8th Grade Math. It is during this conference period (8th Period 2:48 - 3:40 p.m.) that I will respond to questions from students enrolled in remote learning. I will respond to all requests in as timely a manner as possible, however there may be times when my response is delayed. For questions or academic course support, contact me through email  cbeliveau@florenceisd.net or message within the school’s learning management system (Canvas).

Tutoring

Tutoring will be scheduled after school from 3:40 to 4:00 daily. Additional opportunities for tutoring may be provided on an individual basis throughout the year. The tutoring schedule may be adjusted based on additional duty assignments assigned to the teacher. Tutoring sessions may be held remotely via Zoom.
